Private health insurance

We’ll guide you every step of the way—from your initial consultation to the start of your contract

Back in Germany—what now? Returnees from assignments abroad have unique options when it comes to health insurance. If you’re looking to sign up for private health insurance, you’ll benefit from our specialized solution: simple, fair, and designed specifically for your situation as an expatriate.

Why private health insurance?

What you should know:

Statutory health insurance is facing growing challenges. Forty-two health insurance companies have already raised their premiums as of January 1, 2026, and forecasts predict that the statutory health insurance premium rate could reach up to 26 percent by 2050—with benefit cuts considered a realistic scenario. The reason is structural: Under the pay-as-you-go system, younger people finance the costs of older people without setting aside reserves for the future. Demographic change is exacerbating this problem year after year.

Private health insurance works fundamentally differently. Under the funded system, every insured person builds up aging reserves in their younger years—a form of provision that remains stable regardless of demographic fluctuations. The premium depends on the selected plan, the age of enrollment, and the state of health, not on income.

The difference in benefits is also crucial: In statutory health insurance (GKV), the legislature determines what is reimbursed—and has gradually reduced this scope over decades through reform laws. In private health insurance, benefits are contractually guaranteed and can be selected individually. You decide for yourself what coverage you want—from treatment by a chief physician to vision aids and preventive checkups. Your doctor can treat you according to the principles of medical practice without the restrictions of the statutory health insurance’s cost-effectiveness requirement.

The result: According to PwC’s Healthcare Barometer 2025, 93 percent of privately insured individuals feel well-protected—compared to 86 percent in the statutory health insurance system.

It's that easy

Five steps to getting your insurance coverage

Step 1: Book a consultation appointment

Choose a time that works for you—conveniently online via Calendly.

To help us prepare as best as possible, please provide some basic information in advance:

  • Planned return date
  • Your age
  • Pre-existing conditions: yes/no
  • What kind of care is important to you?
  • Do family members need to be insured as well?

Step 2: Consultation & Needs Assessment

During a personal consultation, we’ll work with you to assess your individual needs and present you with suitable private health insurance plans. We’ll take your situation as a returnee into account.

Step 3: Application & Health Questionnaire

We can fill out the application together during the appointment, or you can receive a PDF to complete on your own. It’s best if we go through the health questionnaire together.

Step 4: Feedback on the medical underwriting

The insurer reviews your application and provides feedback. We’ll explain all your options and help you make a decision.

Step 5: Policy Start Date

Upon approval, your new private health insurance policy takes effect on the agreed-upon date. Your coverage begins—and we’ll be here to assist you anytime afterward.
